So I started 'doodling out' a nursery room scheme...

'Get ready for Muppet domination'....

They're back...after thirteen years...and so are we, after four days without a computer...I broke it!

The Muppets are back next month ( Feb 10th ) with a new movie...and I can't wait...!

It just goes to show the appeal of puppets for generations of kids...young and old...that this group of strange critters can come back after so long.

Naturally the creators of the Muppets have been going for some time now and have got quite good at the whole 'puppet' thing...but try out some basic puppet-making kits and a D.I.Y. theatre and your little ones will be putting on productions of their own in no time...

The Christmas buying season is upon us...well, some of us...I'm yet to get fully in the swing of things.
But that's the problem when you have a birthday in the middle of December...when do the birthday celebrations finish and the Christmas rush start...?

Preparing for the kid's Christmas sleepover...

If you're hosting the Christmas festivities this year, chances are you're going to need to find extra sleeping space for a number of excited brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews or grand children over the holiday period.
Help is at hand from Dreams and Wishes...with a few tips that may help prepare your home for the impending onslaught....

One...plan in advance where the kids are going to sleep...consider all rooms int he house, not just the bedrooms...the older kids may prefer to 'camp out' downstairs away from the little ones.

It's been a big week for the little ones....first we had Halloween on Monday...and it was lovely to see all the effort that had gone into the kid's costumes...made me think of the 'trick or treat' night scenes in E.T.....!
And this weekend is Bonfire Night!

I always think of it as a Winter BBQ...hot-dogs, warming soups, sticky toffee apples and marshmallows...!

Our local authority run Fireworks display is celebrates it's 40th year this weekend...not bad, I say...

I've always loved the Union Jack as a design feature...with the Queen celebrating her Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics coming to London next year this design is set to be a favourite for some time to come...

Firstly, go for a fairly flat pile, it's easier to keep clean, is more durable and is easier to play on.

Secondly, consider whether synthetic or natural fibres are more appropriate for your needs...synthetics are more stain-resistant while natural fibres are more comfortable.

For his first Halloween party...It's the first time, and the only time, I will be dressing Deebo up in this manner...a dog has his pride you know...although he does have a Winter coat and Christmas jumper!

'Kitsch' is back in vogue again...

Whilst not a new interior style...some might say 'anti-style'...'kitsch' has made a welcome return for the Winter months. Of German origin, the term describes replicated or mass-produced art that's considered a bit ostentatious...! Pippa Jameson, the popular interior stylist has described the trend as 'fun, bright, decorative and comical' and Wayne Hemingway of Red or Dead fame loves the style enough to have penned a pocket guide on the subject....!
But before you go racing out to your local car boot or pour over Ebay for 'everything tacky'...this season is all about moderation...a few quirky additions to add a touch of humour without going OTT!

The collection of Vladimir Tretchikoff paintings, dubbed the 'king of kitsch', on the wall of this elegant, mid-century living area add just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek humour required...

Look out for child subjects in a similar painting style for a kid's room...

Retro, 1970's inspired wallpaper prints work well when used sparingly in a pared-down interior...

There's no need to cover the entire room anymore...it's more about a statement piece this time round.

All those 'bad-taste' items you thought would never see the light of day again are back...! With a twist though...

A line of flying ducks in a minimalist interior, for maximum impact....for instance.

Or an iconic pink flamingo...as a simple wall mural....

Animal print fabrics, lava lamps and retro ornaments are all fair game, in small amounts!!

It's about creating a sense of quality with a little bit of your own personality thrown in rather than filling your home with cheap nic-nacs.

I'm being interviewed tomorrow for a local children's events magazine.
It got me thinking....about my business...designing children's rooms, my inspirations and role models and my goals for the future.

Certainly, in the Summer of 2006 when I was contemplating a return to the world of design, the chance reading of a Cookie Magazine article on Jan Eleni, the New York based children's interior designer, persuaded me that my musings on a similar vein were not as fanciful as I'd first thought....an opportunity to start my own design business followed within weeks...and I jumped at the chance!
Dreams and Wishes, children's interiors was launched...

Jan Eleni told Decor8's Holly Becker that she started her business to break away from typical 'cookie cutter' style room designs and involve the kid's in the design process to best achieve a result that everyone would be happy with....both these aspects have strongly influenced my own motivations for my business too.

I continue to be a great admirer of Jan's work and visit her website on occasions to catch up on new projects... see for yourself her unique style and flair.....while I go away and prepare my interview notes...!

For many of you the next few days will be a last-minute mad dash to get everything ready for school next week...eager little shoppers will be pestering their parents for all sorts of 'stuff' to fill school bags ready for anything the teacher may task them with...

Dreams and Wishes looks at a few essential purchases for the new school term...

Something to write with is a must!
Combine some sensible items amongst the weird and wonderful pieces your child will claim they can't live without....don't forget ruler, rubbers, pencil sharpeners, etc.

A pencil case....well, they're going to need somewhere to put all those stationary items you've just spent a small fortune on...!

Once lessons get going there'll be notes and papers to store...two or three ring binders are ideal to keep everything safe...and in one place!

Finally, a sturdy bag or backpack to carry everything to and from school.

We're loving the Retro vibe at the moment...with bright, bold logos with a more 'grown-up' feel.

I've sat and watched the rain fall all day...but the good news is that it's inspired me to consider using 'cloud' images when decorating a kid's room....

Weekend makeover...chest of drawers for a kid's room.

Take one rather uninspiring piece of furniture, paint, some Cath Kidston wallpaper....and, in a weekend, create a show-stopping addition to your kid's room.

Simple pine chests are easy to find in furniture charity shops, newspaper ads, Ebay, etc...

To transform your chosen piece....you will need...

Sand paper

Wood primer paint

Satin wood paint, white is a widely available option.

Paint brush.

Some wallpaper off-cuts, we've showcased Cath Kidston's 'cowboy' wallpaper here.

Wallpaper paste and brush.

PVA glue.

Scissors or craft knife.

Firstly, remove drawer knobs and sand down all the treated surfaces of your chest of drawers, including the drawers...dull and time-consuming I know, but essential for a professional, long-lasting finish.

Apply a couple of coats of the primer all over, leaving the required drying time between coats...you may need to sand lightly after each coat to maintain a smooth finish.

Apply the top coat all over...you'll need to decide how many coats you need depending on the finish you want. Leave the drawer fronts if covering completely with wallpaper....

To cover the drawer fronts, measure the surface area and transfer to the back of the wallpaper...try to use the same piece of surface pattern for each drawer to ensure a 'professional' look.

Using the wallpaper paste, apply the wallpaper pieces to the drawer fronts and when dry go over the top with a watered down PVA mix to protect from knocks.

The example below...photographed by Penny Wincer and featured in the book Homemade Home by Sania Pell has been decorated using a decoupage technique...small pieces of the overall pattern have been carefully cut out and stuck on to create an original scene.

As before, once your wallpaper pieces are attached, use a light mix of PVA to secure...

Paint the drawer knobs to match before reapplying.

That's it...a weekend well spent creating a useful, unique storage item in your kid's room...

We got a note in the post at the Dreams and Wishes office this week...telling us that Win Green was closing it's doors for the last time this Summer...
I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling a little sad about this news...their imaginative designs have been a popular addition to kid's rooms for ten years now and will be sorely missed...by stockists and customers alike I would suggest.
I don't know the reasons behind this decision...and don't want to speculate, but I wish everyone connected with the company the very best for the future...

I know we're only a few days into August, but it won't be long before the new school year is upon us and the return of ...homework!!
Here are a few tips from Dreams and Wishes to help you plan and prepare an inspiring space for your little mastermind.
Start with the basics...a desk, a chair and some simple storage is all that's needed to start with.
Adapt existing furniture if you can, before buying anything new...but get your child to 'test' any items for long-term comfort.
Can you fit a study area into your child's room? That way any half finished projects can be left in place without affecting family life around the home.
Consider what lighting is required early on. Have you sufficient sockets for table lamps or would wall lamps be a better option?
Don't forget the storage! Plan for more than you think you'll need and keep it simple for quick tidy-ups.

I've been whiling away the hours online tonight...without really achieving anything... A far cry from the last week or so, when the house has been turned upside-down with an abundance of 'recycling projects'.
The garage has been cleared of a number of pieces of furniture, only to be replaced with more well deserving items eager for a new lease of life...hence the lack of blogs recently!

Still my lazy evening has not been in vain...I came across these delightful rag dolls...I hesitate to use the term 'rag'...these dolls are hand made using cotton, linens, recycled and vintage fabrics and each is made to order.
Jess Brown is their creator, having started out eleven years ago making dolls for her children.

So how about an 'outer space' inspired room for the kids?

Any parent, whatever the age of their kids, is no doubt aware of the endless collections of small toys that seem to accumulate almost without warning. I'm talking about things like marbles, lego, dolls accessories, small cars...the list goes on..!
So how to store these items effectively without making it difficult for the kids...?

Plastic containers are probably one of the most ecconomical and efficient storage solutions for little bits and pieces...you can label them easily...stack them to save space...and they are available in almost every size you can think of!

If you're not keen on plastics in your kid's room...how about baskets?

These, again, are great at hiding away bits and pieces, although not so effective for stacking...!

These numbered baskets add such a calming effect to what would make a great crafting/play room...I can just imagine a rabble of kids around that table creating their masterpieces...and then everything back in the baskets minutes after they've finished...easy peasy!

Take inspiration from the kitchen and use magnetic knife racks for metal toys....

Or the garden...with painted trellis and a few drawer knobs...just fill draw-string bags with toys and hang out of the way.

Nursery style for Harper Beckham

Congratulations to David and Victoria Beckham on the birth of their daughter Harper Seven.
Word has it that no expense has been spared on a nursery fit for a princess...although the average figure is about £50,000...!
Apparently the room is decorated in a 'shabby-chic' style with a French feel...and is pink!

So I've been thinking how I'd fulfil such a brief...

My inspiration comes from faded flowers, vintage jewellery and a classic ballet dress.

There's much speculation that the nursery furniture comes from Petit Tresor...and is decorated with bunnies.

Could this be the wardrobe that will house Harper's first designer fashion collection?

I love the idea of a bit of an American twist to the decor with masses of soft furnishings in pinky tones.

What about the delicate mural too...?

I'm a big fan of chalkboard paint...it gives the flexibility to design and create chalkboard wall art to suit your own needs, and takes little time or effort!
And what child wouldn't love a reusable wall to doodle over...?

So, here's how you do it...

First decide on where the chalkboard is going to go...and what shape it's going to be!

Ask the kids what they'd like or blend in with their interests, animals, music, mythical creatures...you name it!

Simple box shapes are best marked out with masking tape.

If you've decided on a more complicated shape, try drawing straight onto the wall or making a stencil.

Then paint on the chalkboard paint...you'll need two to three coats to give a really good surface.

Once the paint has dried fully...check details on the tin...rub the surface over with a piece of chalk and wash off...this apparently helps future cleaning of the surface!

There! You're done...a useful drawing surface for the kids and a saving on paper into the bargain...!

Independence Day decor for kids.

Creating this blog has now taken two and a half days thanks to several computer 'malfunctions'...I know the weather has been changeable but I'm not sure it's down to atmospherics alone!
Anyway, it's done...I could've painted an entire room in the time it's taken me to do this!!

With Americans around the world coming down from their July 4th celebrations we've been giving a thought to patriotic decorating for a child's room.
Naturally there are certain factors that are fairly fixed...prominent colours are going to be red, white and blue...and any pattern is likely to feature stars and stripes...but, here at Dreams and Wishes, I've not let the rules dictate!
Over recent years the Union Jack flag has been extremely popular as a home decor feature...not so much the American flag...so how about a bit of a change?

Firstly, consider how scale could work in your kid's room.
I love the idea of a massive statement like this oversized wallpaper panel...from Wallpaper Space.

You'd need to be quite 'minimal' with the rest of the decor though or the effect could be lost in all the clutter.

I'd keep the rest of the room white, with plain white furniture and plenty of hidden storage.

Or...how about a shift in the other direction, with a subtle hand-printed effect wallpaper?

This one from Laura Ashley is covered in tiny stars...

If a starting point is eluding you why not look for art pieces that will not only add drama to the room but give a focus for the rest of the scheme.

I love the painting above by Childe Hassam...not only does it depict the American flag, but also offers lots of scope for the colour and style of the room it would hang in.

The simple white star by Julie Smith would inspire me to create a simple paired-down room with a 'shabby-chic' feel...lots of washed out red and blue and vintage furniture.

So what about colour?

Obviously, red white and blue are your options, but don't be afraid to experiment with different shades of these colours...

The furniture below, from Ghost, is painted in muted colours that add a 'lived-in' charm, rather than the harsh primary colours often used in a red, white and blue kid's room scheme.

These cushions from Karen Hilton break completely from tradition whilst retaining the 'American' theme if the idea of red, white and blue is starting to bore you...!

When it comes to flooring...I'd go for a rug in a stripe or star pattern...that way you can incorporate it into future designs...

Now to add the final touches...

I especially like the use of the flag as a curtain in this bedroom...seen on Shelter Pop.

Or, how about simply changing door and drawer knobs to fit with the scheme...?

How surprised was I to hear the news that Habitat (UK) has gone into administration...?
The brand is as old as I am...ouch! So maybe I just thought it would keep going forever...!
I know it's not the first major player to disappear from our High Streets...and sales of homewares have dipped over the last couple of years...but still, Habitat...!!!?

At Dreams and Wishes we took a look through some classic Habitat design classics, past and present, for our favourite kid's room mix....

How about the Mini Hana four poster bed to start with....and it's specially designed 'wendy curtains'...

...And a bright green Slot wardrobe...with storage that suits the growing stages of your little ones.

Firstly...have a think about films with a 'Dad' theme...that the whole family can enjoy...take it back in time for a classic...or an animated adventure...here's a few to get you thinking...

Next...make up some simple tickets to hand over at the living room door...just like a real cinema.

No cinema would be complete without the popcorn and pick-n-mix...and it takes a few minutes to make your own, with the wonders of a microwave.

get the kids to lay out sweets in small containers for Dad to make his selection...hopefully you'll still have some left by the time it's Dad's turn.

Create a cinema atmosphere in the living room by drawing the curtains and keep the lighting low.

You could put numbers on the chairs and have background music playing too...

Get the kids to take Dad's ticket at the door and show him to his seat...if available, provide them with a small torch to guide him through the darkened room.

Then everyone takes their seats for the main event...!

A fun way to keep the kids amused and a great evenings' entertainment...

If you were to look through the toy box of any young lad in my childhood years, you'd find a motley collection of metal toy cars in various stages of damage determined by their age and popularity.

But whatever their condition, toy cars have remained a firm favourite for kids for generations....

Although, whilst researching modern toys for the Dreams and Wishes stockroom, I note that modern toy car designs have changed beyond compare....

Sleek modern designs, mostly made in sustainable woods...and some even in eco-friendly bamboo....and with paint-jobs that would look good on a full size model!
What little boy wouldn't want the chance to take a look at these beauties...that's if they can keep the Dads away...

Yes, it's official!
Read it here....scientists, no less, in America have come up with some very 'grown-up' reasons why eating a little bit of dirt is good for you.
Now, I don't want to rain on their parade...but I think there's probably a lot of parents out there who knew that already! What do you say?

OK, this may be a bit extreme...but what does it mean for the kids? I suggest a bit of gardening might be the answer...an opportunity to get dirty while growing healthy fruit and veg into the bargain...whoopie!

Here's a Dreams and Wishes 'Top Ten' of gardening tips for the youngsters....

Make a space in the garden specifically for the kids or, if space is lacking, use patio pots.
Pick a few of their favourite fruit, veg or flower seeds to encourage involvement.
Start with something that grows quickly to maintain interest, such as lettuce or radishes.
Provide them with good quality, child-sized tools to help with tasks.
Include plants they enjoy eating so that they can appreciate the growing process and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
Don't forget to label seeds as you plant for easy reference during growing period.
Find fun ways to protect seedlings from birds, etc. Get the kids to make a scarecrow or bird scarer.
Give everyone little tasks to keep them active and interested.
Be prepared to get very dirty...keep a supply of old clothes available.
Be amazed when your kids actually want to eat their greens and have the cook books ready.

World Environment Day...June 5th.

Countries across the world will be celebrating World Environment Day this Sunday, after months of campaigns, events, seminars and activities all designed to promote each and every one of us doing our bit to preserve the beauties of the world for future generations.

Whilst it's easy to rely on governments to do the 'hard work' in reducing waste and saving natural resources, each and every one of us can make a difference on a small scale...which adds up to a very big positive impact on reducing our carbon footprint!

World Environment Day was started in 1972, to promote positive environmental action around the world...so how can we do our bit?

Making small changes can make a big difference...

Try opening the windows rather than using air freshener sprays and chemicals.

Dry the laundry outside on the line rather than in the tumble dryer.

Buy foods from local growers and suppliers.

Cut back on chemical cleaners around the house and use natural products instead.

Try growing some of your own food.

Switch to a renewable energy supplier.

Get the kids involved with recycling household waste.

Well, all the hard work has been done...I've put away the paint brushes...and my sewing machine must be breathing a sigh of relief...!
The envelope with everything I could think of to explain my passion for designing children's rooms was posted a couple of days ago...!
Now all I can do is wait to see if I've been successful.
In any event, the whole experience to date has been so very enjoyable...and I've created a few 'crafting firsts'...well for me they're firsts!!

Making polka dot stencils using a potato and hand sewing vintage dolls bedding and a quilt... then the fun bit...putting it all together...

Regarded as a staple of the Victorian nursery, doll's houses are still a popular toy in modern kid's rooms...but, oh boy, have they changed over the years....

We've gone soft this week...last week it was all about black and white...now it's about softer grey.

Country Living competition...one week to go!

Firstly, may I just apologise for my erratic posting of late...it seems that Broadband connection to the up-and-coming county of Suffolk has been a little haphazard of late...or is it just my steam driven computer?
Anyway, back to the competition...!
I've been working on an entry for the Country Living Magazine 'Kitchen Table Talent' competition over the last few weeks...and with days to go before the deadline it looks like I'm going to be busy all weekend.
And I've volunteered to help run the BBQ at our local RSPCA centre's open day tomorrow!!!
Yikes!

And...The Baby Show is on at the NEC, Birmingham this weekend...Oh well, guess I'm gonna have to wait for the next one in October.

Bit of a whirlwind post tonight...not sure how well the connection will hold, got lots to do for the competition entry and a mountain of onions to peel ready for tomorrow...
